Twin Towns Of Duisburg
March 1999: Festival "Ein Blick zu anderen Ufern" with deputies from Portsmouth and Vilnius
In march 99 HoKuDu looked around for gay life in twin towns of Duisburg. In the course of the festival "Ein Blick zu anderen Ufern" in march 1999 HoKuDu e.V. had invited deputies from gay and lesbian groups out of twin towns of Duisburg: Scott, Robert and a woman from the Gay Men´s Health Project from Portsmouth as well as Eduardas und Vladimir from the LGL (Lithuanian Gay League) from Vilnius. The twin town status of Lomé is suspended, regarding Calais we could not find any gay connections or contacts. And Wuhan was so crazy far away.
The discussion round gave some impressions, how lesbians and gays lived and loved in the England of 1999, and which influence the repressive Thatcher legislation had and fortunately partly not had and which goals the group had. From Vilnius we heard about unlike worse living situation of lesbians and gays and their groups. The social development lagged years behind that in Germany or England. Spontaneously actions of support got started. Especially a big package of condoms had been organized for the HIV und AIDS prevention work in Vilnius.
October 1999: Lord mayor Bärbel Zieling gives a reception
In october 1999 lord mayor Bärbel Zieling gave a reception for delegations of the twin towns of Duisburg in the town hall. There she mentioned HoKuDu praising for the support of the LGL and donated a PC for their work, which the delegation from Vilnius (including the vice lord mayor) could just take along. The vice lord mayor and the others got very astonished that there are gays in Vilnius and Duisburg as well.
